Whether or not you’re a football fan and whether or not your team made it to the big day, everyone likes a Super Bowl party. And everyone agrees on the best part of any Super Bowl party – Super fun food for Super Sunday!
I’ve been to many a Super Bowl party where I didn’t watch the game. But I went to be with friends, see the commercials, and sample the food. There are some standard things that almost everyone has (cue the Rotel cheese dip), but then folks also add great options based on their own taste. Let’s break down my favorite categories and a couple of Whole30 options for each.
Hearty soups
You just can’t beat a hot bowl of soup to warm up a winter’s day. This is the ultimate comfort food for me, and over the last couple of years, I’ve added many more flavors to my list. My current top two are Stuffed Pepper Soup (original recipe by @paleorunningmomma here; link to my simpler recipe renovation here) and Zuppa Toscana (recipe here by alltheheathythings.com).
These soups are meaty and hearty but also include a good helping of vegetables. My version of the Stuffed Pepper soup in particular is so easy, it would be a breeze to make alongside several other dishes.
You could pre-make your own Italian sausage for the Zuppa Toscana, then just toss it in (find link for that compliant recipe in this post). Honestly, most of the time for cooking this one is cutting the potatoes and tearing the kale.
Both soups are also Whole30 compliant (you don’t have to tell anyone!), but I can imagine they’d be wonderful in single-serving bread bowls for those not bothered by gluten.
Finger Foods
After soups, finger foods rule as Super Bowl food! You could make Buffalo Chicken Dip or jazz it up by putting that chicken into twice-baked potatoes (recipe here)! A little salty, a little crunchy, a little spicy…they’ve got it all. Make a bunch so everyone gets at least one!
And if you’re wanting to mix it up, skip the traditional meatballs in grape jelly and chili sauce. These Baked Mongolian Beef Meatballs hit the spot when you’re looking for bite-sized savory goodness (recipe here).
My friend Debbie made these and really loved the sauce. I might have to try these as meatloaf later (see my meatloaf experiments here).
Lighter but still super fun food
All things “meat” are a hit with the guys, but you also need a couple of things that are just lighter. I made these Guacamole Boats using the idea of the boat from my friend @lowcarbcontessa (on Instagram) but my favorite Easy Guac recipe from @paleorunningmomma (guac recipe here as part of another dish).
Even with the smaller avocados I think this is more dip that anyone should be eating at once, but don’t they look just super cute? (I may or may not have eaten one by myself!)
A family favorite that we have whenever we’re together is Mediterranean Layer Dip (recipe from Aldi here). It’s meant to be a dip OR you could make cucumber or zucchini boats with it so everyone can easily grab one (see the boat instructions here). I’m thinking a 2-inch length would be perfect for this.
