Having favorite restaurants is comfortable and familiar. This is a good thing. But sometimes it’s fun to find food adventures in your own home town.
The younger set tries lots of different restaurants, especially when moving to a new city. So having just moved to Nashville, my friend Brett is opening my eyes to some new places. Even a friend who lives in a different area of town can provide a food adventure!
Five Points Pizza
Being a thin crust gal, I was excited to try this New York style pizza. They have almost 20 different flavors, plus you can do half and half for just $1 more.
I’m trying to go back to the Whole30 so I got the Vegan with vegan cheese, red peppers, mushrooms, garlic and basil. While I enjoyed the thin crust, I gotta say that Emmy Squared’s vegan (called “The Larry”) beat it hands down for overall taste.
Of the other options, the Habañero cream sauce pizza with tomatoes, red onions, and basil was the one that caught my eye. Brett got that one and let me have a slice. That sauce was great! It had just the right amount of heat for a slow burn in the back of the throat. This would be my choice next time for sure! (That’s it at the top of the pic below. My husband went with the tried and true pepperoni and mushroom on his half.)
So many more options! But trying to avoid too much dairy cut out the two Bianca flavors (multiple cheeses). Plus, I’m not a huge fan of green bell peppers, artichokes, or black olives. So, that cut out another few choices.
Bottom line – if I were choosing between the two places, I’d choose Emmy Squared. But, if I were at Five Points, I’d absolutely get the Habañero cream sauce pizza.
We did splurge on the garlic knots as well. They were so pretty, but it was a little disappointing that the great garlic flavor was merely on the top. The rest was just bread…not my favorite thing.
And a Mexican food adventure!
I had a bad experience with a really dark mole sauce recently. So, when my friend Neika wanted to take us out for Mexican at Tito’s, I knew I would steer clear of the enchiladas.
Instead, I chose the Chori Pollo – grilled chicken topped with chorizo, sautéed onions, and queso blanco with rice on the side. It was wonderful! Just the right spice tamed by the mild cheese. And the leftovers for lunch the next day were even good cold! I forgot what I had for lunch and was downstairs and outside before I realized it needed heating…sigh…
We also shared the three amigos dips – guacamole, queso (we went mild), and queso sabrocho with sausage. All were good, but not as outstanding as my meal!
More hometown food adventures to come
Nashville is a big city, and I’m scoping out more places I want to try, particularly some interesting ethnic ones. Have you been looking for food adventures in your home town? Let me know what you found in the comments below!
