I’m not much of a fan of tools that do just ONE thing. If you’re gonna take up real estate on my counter or in one of my kitchen drawers, you better “pay for your keep.” That’s why I’m always excited to find other uses for tools I already have, particularly a simple and easy-to-clean tool. Experimentation gave me these 3 surprisingly powerful uses for a grapefruit spoon.

Figuring out what to cook for dinner
I know you’ve seen it…the meme that says, “Who knew the hardest part of being an adult was figuring out what to cook for dinner every night for the rest of your life before you die!” That is SO spot on it’s not even funny. It is SUPER hard to constantly figure out what to cook for dinner…I’ve definitely felt this struggle.

Com’ on, you’ve done this, too…you start the recipe, get halfway through then find you’re missing a key ingredient or two (or three). But as a food blogger who’s been focusing on all things food for 11 years, shouldn’t I be past the point of making a recipe with only half the ingredients?

You’ve probably noticed a couple of patterns with me…I’m all about the food AND I look for savings everywhere! I’m forever comparing and trying to figure out the better deal…which led me to question pre-bagged produce. I see those sales all the time, but are they good ones? What is the key to finding savings in the bag?

I’m always up for a snack…crunchy and savory things are the best. When I had my frozen shoulder, corn was keeping me inflamed – so no more popcorn. When I went Whole 30 and found that grains cause me trouble, goodbye crackers and pretzels. How would I feed that savory snack craving? That’s when I learned about nut mixes.

My first thought was DUH! But many people still believe it’s cheaper to eat out. Well, it may be if you’re eating ONLY fast food, and you have a family of 2. But that’s not most of us. Many folks now have food sensitivities they need to watch out for or simply choose to treat their bodies better than that overall. But how much are you beating restaurant prices by cooking at home? You’d feel a LOT better if you knew!

My husband would tell you if you don’t like leftovers, you’re not cooking the right things! At our house, we have been known to fight over our favorite leftovers when trying to pack lunches for the next day. But what about when there’s not enough left for a whole lunch? What if there’s only one serving of a veggie or meat and there are 3 to feed? The rule is, even if you have a little left over, use it up…use it ALL up!

By now you know, I love a good menu plan I can use over and over. And I love soups…big comfort food for me. But when it’s hot outside, no one wants to crank up the oven and heat up the inside, too. I start looking for cold dishes to put in my menu plans and cooking methods that will help me beat that heat. Enter summer entrée salads.

The key to less cleanup time after dinner is to rinse it (pots, pans, dishes) before it sticks! Or as my grandmother would have said, “Reench it ‘fore it sticks!” (imagine that heavy Southern/country accent). Silly as it sounds, it’s wise advice. Particularly if you use a lot of red spices or get stuff baked on your pans in the oven like I do.

We’re deep into summer…the very best season for fresh fruit! But honestly, comparing fruit prices can be frightening once you really delve into it (which, of course, I did!). Gotta tell you, I’m thinking you’ll be scared too once you see the actual cost you may be spending on fruit when you don’t have to.
