There are tools that are fun (and you think you’ll use ‘em but you never do), and then there are tools you just HAVE TO HAVE! If you ever grate ANYTHING and have some left over, there is one tool you absolutely should have!
Grater, box for storage AND a cover???
Once when I needed to borrow Parmesan for a dish at a potluck (I was on Whole30 at the time but had made a dish that just really need the Parm!), my friend brought hers…in a box with the grater attached AND a cover! I couldn’t believe it! She bought hers in Brazil, but thankfully I was able to get the Cheese Grater With Container – Parmesan, Ginger, Butter Grater – BPA Free Food Collection And Storage Container With Handle, 3 Blade Non-stick Coating Vegetable And Fruit Pasta Salad Zester on Amazon. Now that we’re doing reintroduction of dairy, I grabbed it and grated up my cheese in a jiffy with little to no mess since it catches the cheese as you grate!
Why do I choose to grate my own cheese? First, it’s a little cheaper (I always like cheaper), and second, I just don’t like reading all the stuff they’ve put in it to keep it from sticking together once it’s shredded…stuff I’m paying for but don’t want to put in my body. I’d rather just grate what I need when I need it and have it all be cheese!
What else can you grate?
I recently grated my own russet potatoes for Ham and Swiss Rosti (recipe here) though I wasn’t as happy with how these worked (more on that later but not the grater’s fault). I’ve grated my own carrots for cole slaw though I forgot to use this tool and was really mad at myself when I realized it (can’t find bagged cole slaw mix, make your own like this). You could also grate zucchini for chocolate zucchini bread!
It’s easy to clean as well. Just wipe with your soapy cloth in the OPPOSITE direction from the way you grate. I’ve used cylinder-type graters before, and they’re hard to get all your veggies or cheese outta the teeth. No problems like that here.
Can you tell I’m a fan?
I don’t often go on about a particular tool, but when I find one as good as this one, I just have to sing its praises. And of course, I think EVERYONE who enjoys cooking should have the best tools!
What’s your favorite tool? Maybe you’ve found one I haven’t tried yet. Let me know in the comments below.
